The camel Arabs of the northern Sahara — nomads of the Grand Erg whose méhariste companies the French recruited to police the desert, and whose position at Ghardaïa alongside the Mozabites has periodically turned violent.

Steamed semolina under a vegetable and lamb broth, eaten on Fridays and at every family occasion. UNESCO listed it in 2020 as shared heritage of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania, after the four countries filed jointly rather than fight over it.

The Camel CompaniesHistorical account
The French recruited Chaamba into the compagnies méharistes, camel-mounted units that policed the Sahara from the 1890s. The service gave the tribe weapons, pay and a role in the colonial order, and set it against the Tuareg confederations the companies were used to subdue. That history still colours relations across the desert.
GhardaïaContemporary account
The M'zab valley holds Ibadi Mozabites, who built its five fortified cities, and Sunni Chaamba who settled among them. The two communities differ in doctrine, language origin and economic role. Tensions have flared repeatedly, most seriously in 2013 to 2015, when sustained violence in Ghardaïa killed dozens and required national intervention.
