The Amazigh of the Aurès — mountain farmers and herders whose fortified granaries crown the ridges, whose women fought in the war of independence in numbers, and who claim the Kahina, the queen who led the last great resistance to the Arab conquest.

Ceremonies: Rahaba dance with responsorial song; weddings lasting days with women's poetry; the harvest and threshing seasons; visits to marabout tombs.
Marriage customs: Endogamy within the lineage strongly preferred; women historically retained rights over property in ways unusual in the region; bridewealth in silver and livestock.
Initiation rites: No formal rite; tattooing marked stages of a woman's life in the older tradition, and competence with the flock or the terraces marked a man's.

Steamed semolina under a vegetable and lamb broth, eaten on Fridays and at every family occasion. UNESCO listed it in 2020 as shared heritage of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania, after the four countries filed jointly rather than fight over it.

The KahinaHistorical tradition
Dihya, called al-Kahina, led Amazigh resistance to the Umayyad conquest from the Aurès in the 690s, defeating an Arab army before being killed. Arab chroniclers made her a sorceress; Amazigh, Algerian nationalist and feminist traditions have each claimed her since. She is the Aurès's founding figure and one of the most contested people in North African history.

The Algerian war of independence began in the Aurès on 1 November 1954, and the mountains became Wilaya I of the FLN. The region paid for it with mass displacement into regroupment camps and heavy casualties. Shawiya women's participation, as fighters, couriers and shelter-givers, is central to how the region remembers the war.

Isolation does not mean forgetting.
Creation: Islamic cosmology over Amazigh substrate; caves, springs and particular peaks retain significance and prohibitions.
Beliefs: Sunni Maliki Islam; marabout tombs and zawiya lodges; belief in baraka and the evil eye; the tattoo tradition carried protective meanings now largely lost.
